Designing with Mother Earth

One Day: 6 hours

Maximum: 15

Level: For those who are willing to think!

Spend a day with Hilary of “Mother Earth” Designs, and learn the basics of creating a pattern that uses the Top-stitch Curved Piecing technique - the main building block for her art quilt patterns.

Participants will manipulate curved lines, and gain a comprehensive understanding of what goes into the thinking behind creating their own pattern, complete with embellishments such as couching, bobbin-stitching, sheer overlay and bead trails.

NOTE: This is a workshop for pattern designing only – there will be no sewing involved. Each participant will create their own black line drawing, complete with embellishment markings, ready for making their own piece of quilt art. Final designs will reflect the individual’s experience and design ability.

One Day: 6 hours

Maximum: 15

Level: Intermediate to Advanced (experience with free-motion stitching and a few degrees of patience suggested)

THREAD.  That’s what this is about…  We used to think of thread as the element that holds fabric together, when making a seam.  It has become so much more than that!

This overview workshop will launch you into creating thread accents to be used as a focal point.  Progressing from simple shapes, through to gently enhancing an image, participants will learn to use thread in the machine like working with a pencil.  No hoops, weird goopy materials or magic tricks.  No need to be able to draw like an ‘artist’ either.  This will be pure, solid stitching.

What a fun way to use up scraps of fabrics – woven bands of cloth make up the base for this “Book Wrap”. One Day: 6 hours

Maximum: 12

Level: For those with an adventurous spirit!

The definition of “mettle” is to have strength of character…   Well, this workshop will definitely require you to be brave!  You have heard correctly –everyone gets to use a blowtorch!!

Instruction will be given on the entire how-to’s involved when working with metal as an appliqué accent.  First, each student will have the opportunity to anneal their chosen metals.  Demos of embossing and colouring will come next, followed by learning how to incorporate your metal creation into an art piece.  From there, the sky’s the limit, right?!  This workshop will allow the artistically timid a chance to try something that seemed ‘scary’, under the guidance of an experienced textile artist.

Kit Fee: $20
